Biotech Indigo at a Tipping Point
Inside Denim spotlights the rise of a new responsible indigo standard that the denim industry must embrace.
For over a century, 99% indigo has come from petrochemical sources.
A dominance built on energy-intensive processes and relying on non-renewable and toxic raw materials.
Yet denim’s iconic blue doesn’t have to come at a heavy cost to the planet.
- In 2024, we’ve started producing at industrial scale our first biobased dye, Eco-Indigo marking a major milestone not just for us, but for the entire denim ecosystem.
- In early 2025, through a successful collaboration with Orta Anadolu in Turkey and à Citizens of Humanity Group in the U.S., the first denim collections dyed with our Eco-indigo hit the market with thousands of jeans that symbolize a more responsible era for denim.
Why does it matter ?
Because dyeing is one of the most polluting stages in textile and apparel manufacturing. The introduction of an indigo dye with a radically lower environmental footprint compared to petrobased indigo should drive a systemic shift across the industry.
As our CEO Jérémie Blache shared with Inside Denim:
We are creating a new standard that is reliable. Traceability, innovation and responsability are driving this change and soon, regulation will too.

The momentum is real. From innovators to denim mills and global brands, the message is clear: change is possible and it’s already happening.
Being more sustainable is not only the right thing to do, but also a strategic advantage.
Let’s keep pushing toward an industry where the colors we wear truly answer the challenges of our time.
