Pili Secures €4 Million to Decarbonize the Color Industry!

We are thrilled to announce that Pili has been awarded €4 million in funding from ADEME to industrialize our biobased indigo production! This significant support, part of the ADEME "Biobeased Products and Industruial Biotechnologies" call for projects, is co-financed by the French government under the France 2030 program and the European Union.

EU supports the industrialization of biobased indigo

Pili has developed a hybrid process that combines fermentation and organic chemistry, drastically reducing the reliance on petroleum, energy, and hazardous chemicals to synthesize colors. This ADEME-funded project will support the scale up of this innovative process.

Specifically, this project aims to build a demonstration unit for the production of Pili bio-based indigo, targeting the Denim industry. Currently, 99% of the world’s indigo comes from fossil raw materials. Pili’s mission is to offer a decarbonized alternative and build the first factory dedicated to bio-based indigo production.

Key Objectives:

  • Process reliability: dozens of industrial batches need to be manufactured to insure a perfect reproducibility and reliability of large-scale production
  • Initiate recurring supply: secure client capacity reservation and recurring deliveries.

The demonstration unit will help Pili achieve these goals by providing critical data and producing the first tons of bio-based indigo. This unit will be located at the Roches-Roussillon platform, supervised by GIE OSIRIS ROUSSILLON and operated by Pili’s dedicated team.

We are deeply grateful for the support from ADEME, the French state, and the European Union. Together, we are taking significant steps towards a more sustainable and decarbonized future for the color industry.
Stay tuned for more updates as we progress on this exciting journey!
